
![]() Colors, colors everywhere - but what do they mean in the Lutheran Church? People of many faiths believe that colors are gifts from God, a sharing of heavenly beauty and splendor with those on earth. Throughout the ages, colors have been used as symbols in worship, and in many Christian denomiations, colors are used as reminders of Jesus Christ, the "Light of Life." In many churches, the colors of the clergy vestments and church adornments mark the seasons and occasions of the church year. The Evangical Lutheran Church of America, for example, uses the following colors in their worship: | ||

This color is used during the a large portion of the year, appearing
during the seasons of Epiphany and Pentecost. Green symbolizes
growth. |

Black is used only on Good Friday and Ash Wednesday. Black,
absence of light, symbolizes what life without Christ would be like. |

An optional color for Easter, gold is also a suggested color for Christ
the King Sunday, the last Sunday in the church year. Gold is gaining
popularity as a symbol of the golden festival of the Resurrection of Christ. |

Purple is used during Lent, and sometimes during Advent. This
color represents somberness and solemnity, penitence and prayer. |

A color of purity and completeness, white is used on the Sundays in the Easter
season. White reinforces the message of joy, purity, and a cleansing of
sins. White is also used on festive holidays such as Christians and
Epiphany. |

Red is the color of power. It is used on Pentecost Sunday.
Representing strength, it is also used on Sundays such as Reformation Sunday, Holy
Cross Day, dedications, anniversaries, ordinations, installations and other special
occasions. |

A more contemporary color in the church palette, blue used by some congregations
in observance of the new year. It conveys the message of hope.
It is also used in some churches during Advent. |
