Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Happy New Year!  We enter a new year and witness to a world that needs a church willing to get involved and spread the gospel of Jesus Christ.   Our passion is our mission, “To Know Christ and to Make Christ Known,” and our mission is our purpose for being.  This mission says that we cannot stand idly by when the world is dying of loneliness, alienation, and apathy.   Just because we may not be so affected doesn ’t take us off the hook, as Jesus calls us to be liberators in this world.

We begin by recognizing our diversity and celebrating our varying gifts useful to God for the furthering of His kingdom.   If we believe that the gospel of Christ can save lives and transform our world, then we are the light bringers and the ambassadors.   To take the message of Jesus seriously is to be willing to die.   As Dietrich Bonhoeffer once said, “When Jesus Christ calls a person, He bids them come and die.”   We die to our own agendas and our own flesh desires in order to live Spirit lives of holiness and love for God ’s agenda.

We realize that no one person is Advent Lutheran Church.   Collectively we are the body of Christ and thus we are His church.   The unity we share is Jesus Christ. "To Know Christ and to Make Christ Known ” is a humbling mission of great risk as we crucify our lives for God, learn Jesus' way and see Him in others.   We share one vision and mission yet through a wide variety of gifts.   Our diversity is our strength and the Holy Spirit is our guide, our vision, and our hope.   I invite all of you who have joined Advent to share your gifts and ideas from God.

It doesn ’t matter how long one has been a “member” - we are all here by the grace of God, not by works.   Our mission begins with our knowledge of Jesus and then “the Christ in me greets the Christ in thee.”  I ask you to meditate on the mission of Advent, and I pray that you will grow to know how you are called to be part of such a wonderful journey of life and death in this world.   The world is blind and hungering for a vision of God, and we have a message to share, and the time is now.

I ask you to pray and fast in the coming year, realizing that all of us are integral parts of Advent ’s mission.

Yours in God ’s mission,

Pastor Kovitch
